Farmer's Rice Cooperative, also known as FRC, is a grower-owned rice marketing cooperative based in California. Founded in 1944, the organization is the largest rice marketing firm in the state, handling about a quarter of all rice grown in California. FRC operates its main office in Princeton, Colusa County, with milling and manufacturing facilities in West Sacramento.
The cooperative supplies premium California rice to a range of customers, including food manufacturers, brewers, retailers, exporters and distributors. Its products reach both domestic and international markets, with about half of its rice exported to regions such as Asia, the Middle East, Hawaii and Guam. FRC operates its main office in Princeton, Colusa County, with milling and manufacturing facilities in West Sacramento.
What happened?
Between Aug. 30, 2024, and Sept. 2, 2024, Farmer's Rice Cooperative experienced a ransomware attack compromising the personal information of thousands of individuals involved with the company. The data breach was discovered on Aug. 31, 2024, and a forensic investigation confirmed that unauthorized access occurred during this period.
On Sept. 4, 2024, the ransomware group known as PLAY claimed responsibility for the attack, posting on the dark web that they had accessed and published private and confidential information, including client documents, payroll records, contracts, tax information and IDs.
Farmer's Rice Cooperative notified affected individuals by mail on July 1, 2025. The total number of impacted individuals has not been released, but includes at least 4,210 Maine residents.
