About Family & Community Services

Family & Community Services Inc. is a nonprofit organization based in Portage County, Ohio. Established in 1944, the organization has grown to become one of the largest nonprofit agencies in Northeast Ohio, operating over 70 programs across Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan.

Family & Community Services assists more than 100,000 people annually, relying on a network of over 3,500 volunteers. What happened?

On May 22, 2025, Family & Community Services discovered that its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized actor. While the investigation is ongoing, the organization chose to notify the public out of transparency.

The Qilin ransomware group claimed responsibility for the attack and posted about the incident on the dark web on July 2, 2025, stating they had obtained data from the organization. The breach is believed to be a ransomware attack, and the compromised data may include sensitive personal and protected health information.

The total number of individuals has not been released, but is believed to be in the thousands. Family & Community Services has published a Notice of Data Security Incident on its website. The organization will be notifying impacted individuals by mail once a review is completed.
