About F5

F5, Inc. is a technology company based in Seattle, Washington, focused on application security, multi-cloud management, online fraud prevention, and network security. Founded in 1996, F5 is a major provider of application delivery networking solutions and security products for businesses worldwide.

The company’s flagship offerings include BIG-IP, a line of products for load balancing and traffic management, as well as advanced web application firewalls and fraud protection tools. F5 serves a global client base, including many Fortune 50 companies, and partners with leading cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform.

What happened?

In August 2025, F5 discovered that a threat actor had gained unauthorized access to certain company systems. The breach was not publicly disclosed until Oct. 15, 2025, after federal authorities determined a delay was warranted.

F5 reported that the cybercriminal maintained long-term, persistent access to parts of its infrastructure, including the BIG-IP product development environment and engineering knowledge management platform. Some files were exfiltrated during this incident, which included:

  • Portions of F5’s BIG-IP source code
  • Information about undisclosed vulnerabilities in BIG-IP products
  • Configuration or implementation information for a small percentage of customers

The company is directly contacting affected customers as they review the contents of the exfiltrated files.
