Your Rights and Next Steps

If you believe your information may have been involved, there are important steps you can take to protect yourself:

  • Monitor your financial accounts, medical statements, and credit reports for any unusual activity.
  • Consider placing a fraud alert on your credit file. This requires businesses to verify your identity before extending new credit.
  • You have the right to place a credit freeze on your credit report, which prevents new credit from being opened in your name without your authorization.
  • Obtain your free annual credit reports from the three major credit bureaus
  • Report any suspicious activity to your insurance company, health care provider, or financial institution immediately.
  • If you become a victim of identity theft, you can file a report with law enforcement and the Federal Trade Commission
