About California Cancer Associates for Research and Excellence (cCARE)

California Cancer Associates for Research and Excellence (cCARE) is the largest private, full-service oncology and hematology practice in California. cCARE offers services including oncology and hematology consultations, chemotherapy, radiation oncology, infusion and imaging services, as well as access to clinical trials for eligible patients.

With a multidisciplinary team of board-certified oncologists and hematologists at nine locations, the center also provides on-site pharmacy services and care management programs focused on prevention and wellness.

What Happened?

California Cancer Associates for Research and Excellence experienced a major data breach impacting multiple locations and thousands of patients. The cybersecurity incident occurred between Dec. 13, 2024, and Dec. 16, 2024 and compromised both personally identifiable information (PII) and protected health information (PHI).

Integrated Oncology Network, a company that provides administrative services to cCARE, launched an investigation and on May 9, 2025, it was determined an unauthorized actor accessed ION email and SharePoint accounts in order to perpetuate an email phishing scheme. The compromised files included cCARE patient data.

Affected individuals include 7,670 cCARE Fresno, 17,250 High Desert and 638 San Diego patients. The total number of people impacted by the data breach has not been released.

The data breach was disclosed to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and reported to the California Attorney General's office on June 27, 2025. cCARE posted the ION Notice of Email Phishing Incident on its own website.
