Your Rights and Next Steps

If you received a notice from Bison State Bank about this incident, there are important steps to take to protect your information and your rights.

First, consider enrolling in the complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection services being offered. These services can help detect potential misuse of your information and provide support if identity theft occurs.

Next, you may want to place a fraud alert on your credit files. This free service notifies creditors to verify your identity before opening new accounts in your name. You can request a fraud alert by contacting any of the three major credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian or TransUnion.

Another option is to place a security freeze on your credit report. This prevents new credit from being opened in your name without your explicit authorization. Security freezes are also free and can be set up by contacting each credit bureau directly.

You are entitled to a free credit report every 12 months from each of the three major credit bureaus. Reviewing your credit reports regularly can help you spot unauthorized activity early.

If you notice any suspicious activity, report it to law enforcement and file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.
