What Happened?
On Dec. 23, 2025, Apex Spine & Neurosurgery discovered that a cybercriminal had accessed a portion of its computer network and installed ransomware to lock files.
The investigation revealed that files were copied from the network on Dec. 9, 2025.
The ransomware group INTERLOCK claimed responsibility for the attack and posted about the breach on the dark web on Jan. 6, 2026, stating they obtained 20GB of data. The company’s electronic health records platform was not impacted, as it is maintained in a separate network environment.
Information Exposed:
- Names
- Addresses
- Phone numbers
- Dates of birth
- Social Security numbers
- Driver’s license numbers
- Passport numbers
- Other government identifiers
- Health information (including location of health services, dates of service, treatment or condition information, diagnosis, diagnosis codes, prescription information, history information, assigned physician)
- Health services payment information (such as financial account numbers without security codes, access codes or passwords)
- Health insurance subscriber or identification numbers
- Patient account numbers
The incident was reported to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Feb. 6, 2026, with approximately 2,500 individuals affected.
Apex Spine & Neurosurgery has also posted a notification of the data incident on its website. The company has mailed out written notifications to affected individuals with addresses on file.
