About American First Finance

American First Finance is a financial services company founded in 2013. The company is known for providing point-of-sale payment solutions, including lease-to-own options and installment loans, primarily to consumers who may not qualify for traditional credit. FinWise Bank is a partners with AFF to offer installment loans and other financial services to consumers.

American First Finance partners with over 6,500 merchants across the United States, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, serving customers in industries such as furniture, appliances, electronics, automotive repair, jewelry and dental services. The company is headquartered in Dallas, Texas, with a satellite office in Wichita, Kansas.

What happened?

On June 18, 2025, American First Finance discovered a massive data breach had taken place. The cybersecurity incident involved a former employee of FinWise Bank, a partner of American First Finance, who accessed sensitive data after their employment ended. The breach took place between May 31, 2024, and June 3, 2024 and affected 689,000 consumers.

The data breach compromised personal data of individuals  who had or applied for installment loans, lease-to-own accounts or retail installment sales agreements through American First Finance. Affected individuals include 108,069 Texas residents and 208 in Maine.

  • Date of birth
  • Social Security number
  • Driver's license or state ID number
  • Financial account information, including bank account and routing number

FinWise Bank and AFF began notifying affected consumers on July 29, 2025. The data incident was disclosed to the California, Maine, Massachusetts and Texas Attorney Generals' offices beginning on Sept. 12, 2025.
