What Happened?

Accela experienced a data breach involving unauthorized access to one of its secure file transfer portals.

The breach took place between Dec. 11 and Dec. 12, 2025. An unauthorized actor accessed the portal and acquired copies of certain files during this period.

Importantly, the incident was limited to Accela’s systems; the systems of its government clients were not affected.

On Dec. 23, 2025, the Everest ransomware group claimed responsibility for the attack via a posting on the dark web, stating they had obtained one terabyte of internal data and threatened to publish it within a week.

Accela concluded its investigation and disclosed the breach to the California Attorney General on Sept. 14, 2026.
