Western Montana Clinic PC experienced a data breach. on April 15, 2025, the practice discovered suspicious activity in certain employee email accounts, compromising both personally identifiable information (PII) and protected health information (PHI).

An investigation revealed an unauthorized actor accessed employee emails between March 11, 2025 and April 15, 2025. The cybercriminal attempted to change bank account information and redirect Western Montana Clinic funds.

An in-depth review took place and on June 3, 2025 it was determined the accessed emails and attachments contained patient information. Exposed information included names, contact information, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, treating physician, internal identification numbers, dates of service, medication information and treatment and diagnostic information.

The data breach was disclosed to the United States Department of Health and Human Services on Aug. 1, 2025. Western Montana Clinic began notifying affected patients on Aug. 1, 2025 and published a Notice of Data Privacy Incident on its own website.

Protect Your Data

A breach notice means your personal details could be circulating far beyond the organization involved. One practical step is continuous monitoring: services such as Identity Defender (included with an ExpressVPN subscription) can automatically check dark-web markets, flag new credit-file activity, and request removal of your information from data-broker sites.

This kind of “early-warning system” can’t undo a breach, but it can help you spot misuse quickly and limit further exposure. ExpressVPN is offering 61% off, risk-free for 30 days, with ID Theft Insurance included and no extra cost for those who sign up for one or two years.
