Walker Accounting & Tax Service, an accounting and tax preparation firm based in Walterboro, South Carolina, disclosed a data breach in April 2026 involving unauthorized network access and fraudulently filed tax returns.

Walker Accounting & Tax Service detected suspicious activity on its network and launched an investigation to determine the nature and scope of the activity.

The investigation identified unauthorized connections that could have been used to steal information from Walker's system. The company also became aware of fraudulently filed tax returns submitted through its cloud-based tax preparation software.

The types of personal information exposed included names, Social Security numbers, driver's licenses, financial account information and taxpayer identification numbers, and medical information.

At this time, 3,304 South Carolina residents and four Massachusetts residents reported as affected.

Walker Accounting & Tax Service's response to the breach

Walker is offering affected individuals 24 months of free credit monitoring and identity restoration services through Experian IdentityWorks. Those who received a notification letter can enroll at Experian's IdentityWorks enrollment page using the activation code included in their letter.

The enrollment deadline to enroll in the complimentary service is July 31, 2026.

The monitoring membership includes an Experian credit report at sign-up, daily credit monitoring, identity restoration support and $1 million in identity theft insurance. Even after the 24-month membership expires, affected individuals can still receive identity restoration support through Experian's ExtendCare program.

For questions or additional assistance, affected individuals can call Walker's dedicated help line at 855-999-2743, available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Central time, excluding major U.S. holidays.

Individuals may also write to the company at 1476 N. Jefferies Highway, Walterboro, SC 29488.

Steps to take if your information was exposed

  • Place a credit freeze or fraud alert. Contact Equifax (888-298-0045), Experian (888-397-3742) and TransUnion (800-916-8800) to help prevent new accounts from being opened without authorization.
  • Obtain an IRS Identity Protection PIN. Because this breach involved tax preparation data and fraudulently filed returns, requesting an IP PIN from the IRS can help prevent someone from filing a future tax return using a stolen Social Security number.
  • Review financial account statements closely. Since financial account numbers, credit card numbers and debit card numbers were among the data types exposed, affected individuals should monitor bank and card statements for unauthorized transactions and report suspicious activity to their financial institution immediately.
  • Request free credit reports. Visit AnnualCreditReport.com to review reports from all three major credit bureaus for unfamiliar accounts or other suspicious activity.
  • Watch for phishing attempts. Be cautious of emails, phone calls or text messages that reference Walker Accounting & Tax Service or this breach by name, as scammers sometimes use real breach notifications to trick people into sharing more personal details.
  • Report suspected identity theft. File a report with local law enforcement and the Federal Trade Commission at identitytheft.gov or by calling 877-438-4338 if any signs of fraud or misuse appear.
