
The Shipping Association of New York and New Jersey, a maritime trade organization based in Edison, New Jersey, disclosed a data breach that occurred in late May 2026.
The breach was disclosed to the New Hampshire Attorney General on Oct. 2, 2026. The organization began notifying affected consumers on Oct. 2, 2026.
On May 27, 2026, an unauthorized actor accessed certain systems within the Shipping Association's computer network and took files. The compromised systems hosted information relating to certain benefits plans that affected individuals participate in.
Shortly after the breach occurred, the Qilin ransomware group claimed responsibility. The group posted about the incident on a Tor network site on June 8, 2026, claiming to have obtained the organization's data.
The organization's investigation determined on July 9, 2026, that the stolen files contained personal information belonging to certain individuals.
The types of information exposed included names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, driver's license numbers and medical treatment and diagnosis information.
The organization is offering affected individuals a complimentary one-year membership to identity monitoring services through Kroll, a company that specializes in fraud assistance and remediation.
The Shipping Association has also set up a dedicated call center for individuals who have questions about the incident. Individuals who received a notification letter can call 844-301-0223, Monday through Friday, between 9:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time, excluding major U.S. holidays.
