Modoc Medical Center Data Breach Exposes Medical Information

Modoc Medical Center, a county health care facility located in Alturas, California, disclosed a data breach involving unauthorized access to its computer network.

The breach was reported to the California Attorney General on Sept. 22, 2026. The organization also posted a notice about the event on its website.

Modoc Medical Center first detected the unauthorized access on Jan. 27, 2026. Between Jan. 19 and Jan. 27, 2026, an unknown actor gained access to and downloaded certain files from Modoc Medical Center's computer systems.

On Feb. 16, 2026, a threat actor known as Worldleaks posted a claim on a Tor network. The actor stated it had leaked a database belonging to Modoc Medical Center and alleged the data contained sensitive patient and internal records.

The types of personally identifiable information included names, Social Security numbers, driver's license or state identification numbers, financial account information, payment card information, passport numbers and military identification numbers.

Protected health information was also involved, including medical information and health insurance information.

Modoc Medical Center's response to the breach

Modoc Medical Center is offering affected individuals complimentary credit monitoring and identity restoration services through Experian IdentityWorks.

Affected individuals received a unique activation code and an enrollment deadline in their notification letter. Individuals who prefer to enroll by phone rather than online can call Experian's customer care team at 833-931-7577.
