Melcher & Prescott Insurance, a full-service independent insurance agency based in Laconia, N.H., recently experienced a significant data breach, exposing personally identifiable information (PII) and protected health information (PHI) of individuals, including at least 417 residents of Massachusetts.

The breach, which happened on Dec. 16, 2025, involved unauthorized access to sensitive information stored by the agency. The exposed data included both personally identifiable information (PII) and protected health information (PHI): names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, financial account details, medical records, healthcare provider names and locations.

This combination of data presents a heightened risk for identity theft and financial fraud, as it covers not only financial but also medical and personal identifiers. The company has not released details about the specific method of the breach or the party responsible, but the nature of the data exposed suggests the breach was severe and could have long-term consequences for those affected.

The company disclosed the data breach to the Massachusetts Attorney General’s office on Dec. 30, 2025. Impacted individuals have been notified by mail.
