Markel Insurance Data Breach Exposes Social Security Numbers and Medical Information

Markel Insurance, a global specialty insurer and reinsurer headquartered near Richmond, Virginia, disclosed a data breach that occurred in March 2026. So far, 268 Texas residents were impacted.

An unauthorized actor used social engineering to deceive two Markel Insurance employees into giving up access or sensitive information. By targeting these employees, the actor was able to gain access to a portion of the company's systems.

The unauthorized access took place between March 17 and March 18, 2026. The company began an investigation after discovering the unauthorized actor to determine the full scope of the incident.

The investigation included an analysis of the affected data and was not completed until June 29, 2026. The types of personal information exposed included names, Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers and medical information.

The breach was disclosed to the attorneys general offices of California and Texas. Markel Insurance began notifying consumers on July 2, 2026.

Markel Insurance's response to the breach

Markel Insurance is offering 24 months of free credit monitoring and identity restoration services through Cyberscout.

To enroll, affected individuals should visit the TransUnion enrollment page and enter the unique activation code included in their notification letter. The deadline to enroll is Oct. 10, 2026.

Markel Insurance has also set up a dedicated call center to answer questions about the incident and the services being offered. Affected individuals can call 1-844-593-7757 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, excluding major U.S. holidays.
