Heart of America Eye Care, a multi-location ophthalmology and optometry practice in the Kansas City metropolitan area, disclosed a data breach that involved unauthorized access to its computer network.
Heart of America Eye Care's investigation determined that certain information was viewed or taken without authorization between April 1, 2026, and April 7, 2026.
The practice maintains patient records related to its medical and surgical eye care operations. However, the specific types of information that may have been compromised had not yet been confirmed, as the company stated it was still conducting a review to determine whether protected health information was involved.
On May 28, 2026, before the company filed its formal disclosure with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, a group calling itself CMD Organization posted a claim on the dark web. The posting alleged that the group had breached Heart of America Eye Care and obtained 730 GB of data from the practice.
The breach was disclosed to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on June 5, 2026. The company also posted a notice about the incident on its website.
At this time, the company's review of the affected data is still underway. Heart of America Eye Care indicated it would notify any affected individuals directly at the conclusion of that review, though no timeline for completion was provided.
The company encourages individuals to remain vigilant against incidents of identity theft and fraud. It recommends reviewing account statements and free credit reports for suspicious activity and to detect errors.
The company also advises that any suspicious activity should be reported to relevant parties, including insurance companies, healthcare providers and financial institutions.
Individuals with questions about the incident may write to Heart of America Eye Care at 4801 South Cliff Ave., Suite 100, Independence, Missouri 64055, or call 816-350-4701.
