Kern Psychiatric Health and Wellness Center Inc. (PWC), a healthcare provider based in Bakersfield, California, disclosed a data breach that may have exposed sensitive personal and medical information. The breach occurred on the network of PWC's management company, Genesis Healthcare Management.

Genesis is a Bakersfield-based healthcare management firm that helps medical practices and healthcare companies with back-office operations, strategy, consulting and other business services.

Genesis Healthcare Management observed unusual activity on its network on June 22, 2026, and took action to investigate the event. The goal of the investigation was to determine the full nature and scope of the suspicious activity and to identify any data that may have been affected.

The investigation determined that certain files stored on the Genesis network had been accessed without authorization. Because the Genesis network houses certain data belonging to PWC, this unauthorized access potentially exposed patient information that individuals had previously provided to the healthcare center.

After learning about the unauthorized access, PWC began a comprehensive review of the affected files.

The exposed data may include names, Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers or government-issued ID numbers, dates of birth, diagnosis and treatment information, prescription information, provider names and locations, dates of service, medical record numbers, patient account numbers, Medicare or Medicaid ID numbers, lab results and health insurance information.

Genesis Healthcare Management's response to the breach

PWC has set up a dedicated phone line and mailing address for individuals who have questions about the incident. Individuals who may have been affected can call 866-906-8720 or write to P.O. Box 82193, Bakersfield, CA 93380.

PWC also directed individuals to the Federal Trade Commission and the three major credit reporting bureaus as additional resources for learning about identity theft protection.

The company encouraged individuals to remain vigilant against identity theft and fraud by regularly reviewing their credit reports, account statements and explanation of benefits forms for suspicious activity or errors.
