Frontline Education, a company that provides K-12 school administration software to more than 8,500 educational organizations, disclosed a data breach that exposed sensitive personal information of school district staff and students.

On Aug. 14, 2026, Frontline Education's security team identified a vulnerability in a third-party software product the company uses. The vulnerability allowed an unauthorized actor to access a portion of Frontline's computer environment beginning the same day.

The company launched an investigation with the help of an independent cybersecurity firm. On Sept. 23, 2026, the investigation determined that the unauthorized actor had acquired certain personal information.

On Oct. 3, 2026, information about the breach appeared on the open web. The posting claimed that attackers had exploited a vulnerability in third-party software to gain unauthorized access to Frontline Education's systems, according to dark web intelligence sources. The posting further indicated that compromised data included Social Security numbers, email addresses and physical addresses of school district employees.

The types of personal information confirmed as exposed by Frontline Education include Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers and Medicaid IDs.

The incident was disclosed to multiple state attorneys general in late October 2026. According to its respective state filing, the breach affected 16,550 Massachusetts residents, 7,475 New Hampshire residents and 2,985 Vermont residents. The company also posted a notice about the incident on its website and reported to the South Carolina Attorney General.

Frontline Education began mailing affected consumers notifications on Oct. 26, 2026.
