CAZ Investments LP, a Houston-based alternative investment firm founded in 2001, disclosed a data breach that occurred in August 2026.

CAZ Investments identified an intrusion on certain of its systems by an unauthorized third party. The company took action to review the incident and secure its systems.

Its investigation determined that the unauthorized access began on Aug. 8, 2026, and ended on Aug. 12, 2026. The dark web claim appeared roughly nine days after the unauthorized access ended, based on the timeline described in the notification.

CAZ Investments subsequently performed an assessment of the affected data files. On Aug. 25, 2026, the company determined that some of the files that were accessible to the unauthorized third party may have contained personal information.

The types of personal information exposed included names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, government-issued identification (such as passport numbers, tax identification numbers and driver's license numbers) and financial account information.

On Aug. 21, 2026, a ransomware group known as The Gentlemen posted a claim on a Tor-based dark web site stating it had obtained data from CAZ Investments. The group said it intended to publish the stolen data within nine to 10 days.

At this time, 3,824 Texas residents and 413 Massachusetts residents were identified as affected.

The breach was reported to the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation on Sept. 28, 2026, and to the Texas Attorney General on Sept. 29, 2026.
