Bright Smile Dental Care Compromises Protected Health Information

Bright Smile Dental Care Ltd., a family dental practice based in Fishers, Indiana, disclosed a data breach after discovering ransomware on its server on Aug. 3, 2026.

Bright Smile Dental Care engaged cybersecurity consultants to assess the nature of the incident and to limit its impact. According to the data security notice posted on its website, all data on the server was already encrypted, and there was no indication that the threat actor possessed the encryption keys necessary to access and read the underlying patient information.

Despite this, the company stated the suspicious activity on its server impacted its practice management and patient record software as well as its dental imaging software.

The types of personal and health information potentially involved in the incident include names, dates of birth, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, insurance information, information about dependents, health information and, in some cases, Social Security numbers.

Bright Smile Dental Care's response to the breach

Bright Smile is offering free access to credit monitoring services through TransUnion. Affected individuals should refer to the written notice they will receive in the mail from the company for specific instructions on how to enroll.

Affected individuals should monitor their accounts and remain vigilant to protect their identities. Individuals who believe they may be affected should not wait for a letter to arrive before taking basic protective steps.
