The Beacon Mutual Insurance Company, a workers' compensation insurance provider headquartered in Warwick, R.I., disclosed a data breach involving unauthorized access to its computer network earlier this year.
So far, 607 Maine residents were identified as affected. The company began notifying affected consumers by written letter on May 18, 2026.
An unauthorized person gained access to some of the company's systems between Jan. 7 and Jan. 14, 2026, allowing them to make copies of certain files stored on the network. The company detected the unauthorized activity on Jan. 14, 2026.
Shortly after the intrusion, on Jan. 31, 2026, a ransomware group known as INC RANSOM posted a claim on the dark web's Tor network stating it had obtained 275 gigabytes of the company's data. The group claimed the compromised data included internal corporate documents and correspondence, complete financial statements and reports spanning 2018 through 2025, a full employee list with personal details, and confidential agreements, NDAs, vendor contracts and partnership documents.
The types of personally identifiable information exposed in the breach included names, Social Security numbers and driver's license numbers.
Beacon Mutual is offering affected individuals a complimentary membership in Experian IdentityWorks, a credit monitoring and identity theft protection service.
To enroll, affected individuals should visit the Experian IdentityWorks website and use the activation code included in their notification letter. Enrollment must be completed by Aug. 31, 2026, as the activation code will not work after that date.
Beacon Mutual has established a dedicated toll-free call center at 833-918-8448, available Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Eastern, excluding major U.S. holidays. Affected individuals who have questions about the incident can call this number.
