On August 16, 2024, OBI Seafoods, LLC discovered that it had experienced a significant data breach impacting thousands of individuals. The breach itself occurred on August 12, 2024, when unauthorized parties gained access to sensitive personal and financial information belonging to consumers and employees.

In total, the breach affected 19,014 individuals across the United States, with 1,084 of those individuals residing in Texas and 7 individuals in Maine. The compromised data included highly sensitive personal information, making the breach particularly severe.

The exposed information included names, addresses, social security numbers, medical information, dates of birth, and information about dependents and beneficiaries.

Due to the extensive nature of the compromised data, individuals affected by this breach may face increased risks of identity theft, financial fraud, and other privacy-related concerns.

OBI Seafoods' response

Following the discovery of the breach, OBI Seafoods took steps to investigate and mitigate the incident. The company promptly notified affected individuals about the breach on March 12, 2025, through U.S. mail, substitute notices, notices published in print media, and a dedicated announcement posted on the company's website.

To help protect affected individuals, OBI Seafoods provided detailed information about the breach and recommended steps to safeguard personal information. The company strongly encourages those impacted to monitor their financial accounts and credit reports closely for any signs of fraudulent activity. Additionally, individuals should consider placing fraud alerts or credit freezes on their credit files through major credit bureaus.

For more information, affected individuals can review the official breach notification posted on the OBI Seafoods website.

OBI Seafoods also reported the incident to several state Attorney General offices, including:

Protect Your Data

A breach notice means your personal details could be circulating far beyond the organization involved. One practical step is continuous monitoring: services such as Identity Defender (included with an ExpressVPN subscription) can automatically check dark-web markets, flag new credit-file activity, and request removal of your information from data-broker sites.

This kind of “early-warning system” can’t undo a breach, but it can help you spot misuse quickly and limit further exposure. ExpressVPN is offering 61% off, risk-free for 30 days, with ID Theft Insurance included and no extra cost for those who sign up for one or two years.
