Mariner Wealth Advisors Breach Exposes Information of 8,995 Individuals

Mariner Wealth Advisors LLC, a large wealth management and financial planning firm headquartered in Overland Park, Kansas, has disclosed a data breach affecting 8,995 people in the United States, including 117 Massachusetts residents and 17 Maine residents as affected.

The breach involved three Mariner Wealth Advisors associates' cloud applications that were targeted by a criminal third party.

Upon detecting the unauthorized access, the company conducted a detailed investigation alongside third-party cybersecurity experts to determine the full scope of the incident. The investigation found that the criminal third party had accessed the three cloud accounts and downloaded certain files during the period of unauthorized access.

A thorough review of all files that were downloaded determined that some contained personally identifiable and non-public personal information belonging to affected individuals.

The types of personally identifiable information exposed in the breach included names, account numbers, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver's licenses and other government ID numbers.

Mariner Wealth Advisors' response to the breach

The company is offering complimentary credit monitoring services through Cyberscout. The services include single-bureau credit monitoring, a single-bureau credit report, a single-bureau credit score and proactive fraud assistance. Depending on their state of residence, affected individuals may receive either 12 or 24 months of monitoring coverage.

To enroll, affected individuals can visit the Cyberscout enrollment website and enter the unique activation code provided in their notification letter. Enrollment must be completed within 90 days of the letter's date.
