Kirbor Homes, a locally owned home builder serving the Hampton Roads area in Virginia and North Carolina, disclosed a data breach after discovering that a ransomware attack had compromised its computer systems.

Kirbor Homes posted a notice about the incident on its website.

The ransomware group known as PLAY claimed responsibility for an attack on Kirbor Homes network, posting on Feb. 19, 2026, though the dark web that it had obtained data from the company.

The group claimed the compromised information included private and personal confidential data, client documents, budget, payroll, IDs, taxes and finance information. PLAY also stated at that time that it intended to publish the stolen data within four days.

On or about June 10, 2026, Kirbor Homes discovered problems with its computer systems and determined it was dealing with a ransomware incident. The company took steps to contain and stop the ransomware.

The types of consumer information potentially exposed included names, addresses, dates of birth, driver's license numbers or state identification card numbers and Social Security numbers.

The total number of people affected has not been publicly disclosed.

Kirbor Homes' response to the breach

Kirbor Homes is offering free identity monitoring services to potentially affected individuals as a precautionary measure. Individuals who wish to enroll can email the company at monitoring@kirborhomes.com to request the service.

The company's notification also included a detailed list of additional resources for affected individuals. These resources provided guidance on how to obtain free credit reports from each of the three major credit reporting agencies, how to place fraud alerts on credit files and how to set up credit freezes.

The company recommended that individuals remain vigilant by regularly reviewing their account statements and credit reports to detect potential errors, fraud or identity theft.
