Golden State Orthopedics Data Breach: 150GB Compromised

Golden State Orthopedics & Spine, a large multispecialty orthopedic and spine medical group serving Northern California, disclosed a data breach involving patient information, including Social Security numbers and medical diagnosis details.

On July 1, 2026, a ransomware group known as Brain Cipher posted a claim on the dark web stating it had obtained 150 gigabytes of the organization's data. The group said it intended to publish the stolen information within six to seven days.

Approximately one day later, on or around July 2, 2026, Golden State Orthopedics & Spine became aware of unusual activity within its network. The company launched an investigation into the event.

Following the review, the company confirmed that protected health information (PHI) may have been subject to unauthorized access in connection with the incident.

The types of information exposed included first and last names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, health insurance information and medical diagnosis information.

The company posted a notice about the data security incident on its website on Aug. 27, 2026.

The company encouraged affected individuals to remain vigilant by monitoring their accounts for suspicious activity and to contact the three major credit agencies to place fraud alerts on their credit reports.
