Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, experienced a data breach. An investigation determined that an unauthorized actor accessed a legacy file share system maintained by the college between May 21, 2025 and June 10, 2025. Files containing sensitive student information were compromised in the cybersecurity incident.
The cybersecurity incident impacted several thousand students, including 7,727 Washington residents. A review was completed on Oct. 1, 2025 and Evergreen State College began notifying affected individuals by mail on Oct. 17, 2025.
Exposed information included names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers and student identification numbers. The severity of this incident is notable, as the exposed data can be used in identity theft and fraud.
The college disclosed the data breach to the Washington Attorney General's office on Oct. 17, 2025. The total number of affected individuals has not yet been publicly disclosed.
In addition to required disclosures, Evergreen State College is offering impacted current and former students a free one-year membership to Experian IdentityWorks. Services provided include credit monitoring, identity protection and identity theft resolution. The educational institution has also set up a dedicated call center for individuals with questions at 855-291-2691, Monday through Friday, between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Pacific Time.
