CCBC Data Breach Exposes Social Security Numbers and More

Community College of Beaver County (CCBC), a public community college located in Center Township in the Monaca area of Beaver County, Pennsylvania, disclosed a data breach following a cyberattack on its computer systems.

The college posted a notice of the data incident on its website.

The breach began with a cyberattack that involved the encryption of data stored on CCBC's computer systems. The attack was encryption-based, using malware that locks files and systems by encrypting them so they cannot be accessed.

College officials warned staff not to turn on laptops or other devices to prevent the malware from spreading further. Campus technology resources were restricted while the college investigated the scope of the attack and worked to limit damage.

CCBC discovered suspicious activity on its computer systems on March 9, 2026. The investigation that followed determined that an unauthorized party had access to the college's systems between Jan. 16, 2026, and March 9, 2026. During this window, information was obtained by the unauthorized party.

The types of personal information exposed in the breach included names, Social Security numbers, passport numbers and financial account information in combination with credentials. The college noted that the investigation remains ongoing and that it would update its notification if additional information was uncovered.

CCBC encouraged affected individuals to remain vigilant against incidents of identity theft and fraud. The college stated that it is providing affected individuals with resources to help them monitor and protect their personal information.

Given that this breach involved highly sensitive information, including Social Security numbers, passport numbers and financial account credentials, affected individuals may want to take proactive steps to safeguard their information.

CCBC directed affected individuals to the three major credit reporting bureaus for monitoring purposes and reminded individuals that under U.S. law, they are entitled to one free credit report annually from each of the three bureaus.
